Abstract

This chapter focuses on expressive features of nonverbal behavior (NVB) that are associated with certain internal states and (potentially) influence personal and interpersonal outcomes in the broader context of sport. It reviews relevant theoretical work on NVB, the regulation of NVB, and explains how NVB influences impression formation and exerts its impact on other people. The chapter classifies research on NVB and impression formation that has been conducted in the context of sports. It integrates existing theoretical and empirical knowledge on NVB to inform evidence-based practice on how athletes, coaches, and sport officials can deliberately use NVB for self-presentational purposes. The chapter outlines some general recommendations to increase awareness of the displayed NVB in certain situations by informing athletes how their body language is perceived and what reactions it might elicit on observing opponents and team mates.
