Abstract

Alittle studied area of art and decoration is that of tattoos, lip plugs and body decorations of which I found many interesting examples in the various tribes throughout Mozambique. Ritual tattooing or scarification is done with great ceremony at an important juncture of a child's development, usually connected with initiation rites. It is also performed as a member of the tribe assumes a more important political rank or passes from one social level to another, while at other times it has been used to mark slaves. Scarifications are also sometimes made during illnesses with medicines rubbed into them by curandeiros or witchdoctors.
