Abstract
This report outlines a series of studies examining body consciousness in states of pharmacological depression and arousal. These employed Fisher's Body Focus Questionnaire. Altered levels of central nervous system excitation were produced by phenobarbital and caffeine citrate. Under the former conditions, it was observed that the more sedated an individual felt, the more his body consciousness focused on the head. Fisher's “high barrier” subjects were found to be particularly sensitive to the depressant drug. With stimulation a positive relationship was found between the degree of arousal and the extent a subject focused on outer and right aspects of the body. This was more prominent in the “low barrier group”.
