Abstract

In my current research project, an ethnoarchaeological study of indigenous body art, I isolate a single art genre, body art, and consider its stylistic variation across a range of Australasian and Asian societies. My aim is to develop an understanding of how social processes affect style within a specific art genre by systematically evaluating the relationships between body art and social context. The conjunction of recent theoretical advancements in the study of style (e.g. papers in Conkey and Hastorf 1990) and the established value of ethnoarchaeological research, points to a clear need for ethnoarchaeological research into indigenous artistic systems.
