Abstract

The transmission of sermons takes place in the force field between the spoken and the written word. The written text mostly records an actual sermon and/or the cadence of the spoken sermon can be invoked by the text (an aid to preachers). In addition, we can assume something like “imagined” orality in the mind of the individual subsequently reading the sermon. However, the table of content found in manuscripts of the “Paradisus anime intelligentis” does not indicate reception in a specifically liturgical context. Rather, it suggests that the texts, as witnesses of an (actual or invented) community of Dominican preachers of the 1340s headed by Meister Eckhart, were intended to offer to young preachers a theological and linguistic model that they could appropriate for their own preaching practice, either through contemplation or direct excerpting. The two existing manuscripts of the collection suggest this model of reception, although it is likely that this wasn’t the only form of reception intended.Predigtüberlieferung existiert im Spannungsfeld von Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit: der Niederschrift geht meist eine gehaltene Predigt voraus und/oder sie wird durch den Text anzitiert (Hilfe für Prediger). Daneben steht die Rezeptionsform der privaten Lektüre, für die wir eine “imaginierte” Mündlichkeit ansetzen dürfen. Die Handschiften des “Paradisus anime intelligentis” verweisen durch ihr Inhaltsverzeichnis nicht auf eine liturgische Rezeption in gehaltener Predigt, sondern darauf, dass die Texte als Zeugnis einer (tatsächlichen oder fiktiven) Gemeinschaft dominikanischer Prediger der 1340er Jahre mit Meister Eckhart an der Spitze ein theologisches und sprachliches Modell für junge Prediger bieten sollen, das sie sich für ihre Tätigkeit exzerpierend und meditierend aneigneten. Letztere Rezeptionsform legt die Überlieferung in den beiden Handschriften nahe, sie dürfte jedoch nicht die allein intendierte sein.
