Abstract
This essay is dedicated to a friend with whom I shared endless conversations about common enthusiasms: philosophical ideas manifested in literary texts, Italian operas, and delicate French cuisine. Certainly I could find no more fitting way to contribute to an issue of Modern Language Notes devoted to his memory and his work than to offer this paper dealing with the Life of Henry Brulard-a book where the reader can listen to the echos of Don Giovanni or Matrimonio Segreto, smell and taste the flavors of the Cafe Hardy and, above all, admire the wonderful philosophical and literary complexity of a spontaneous and lively writing.
