Abstract

This ethnographic account of Chittagong’s maritime practices highlights the Bengal delta’s exceptional range of river and sea-going vessels. A multidisciplinary approach-based survey to patterns of shipbuilding and trade at Chittagong is lacking, remaining ignored outside the confines of folk specialists and local historians. Situated between South and Southeast Asia and traversing two regions—Bengal and Arakan—a study of Chittagong, one of the main Bay of Bengal ports from medieval times, requires crossing not only political borders but academic barriers as well. Ongoing practices are fundamental to highlighting traditions largely based on unrecorded transmissions.
