Abstract

In France, the central issue of deinstitutionalization has been to establish a better balance between psychiatric hospitals and community mental care. In Greece, budget cuts following the 2008 financial crisis, have led to the decision to complete, within 2014, the abolition of psychiatric hospitals. The aim of this text is to point out that such decisions, made without weighing the needs of the chronically mentally ill for community residential facilities, undermine the deinstitutionalization process, as well as every effort to include community oriented policy in the mental health agenda.
