Abstract

The BMA has decided to enter formal talks on updating the junior doctor contract, having received a mandate to do so from its Junior Doctors Committee. Should NHS Employers receive its own mandate from the four UK governments, negotiations are likely to start in the autumn and to conclude by the end of the year. Last year a report by NHS Employers branded the current junior doctor contract as “no longer fit for purpose,” prompting the government to call for the terms and conditions for trainee doctors to be renegotiated.1 Earlier this year the BMA and NHS Employers agreed on the main areas that would be discussed should both groups agree to go ahead with contract negotiations. …
