African American Studies is at the edge of a second Renaissance, a new level of growth, institutionalization and theoretical advancement. A generation ago, as the Black Freedom Movement collapsed the structures of legal segregation and led to the rise of Black Power, the first African American Studies programs were initiated at white universities and colleges.
