Abstract

Among the mass pigments occurring in the plant kingdom, carotenoids are obviously the most widespread ones; not only all photosynthetic organisms contain carotenoids but also coloring of many fungi and bacteria are caused by these pigments. Carotenoids have many functions in plant life: they act as protective substances against intensive irradiation, they are accessory pigments in photosynthesis, they are attractants for animals in flowers and fruits, and they play a role in sexual reproduction of fungi, to mention only the most important functions.
