Abstract

Novel blue and green emitting BaAl2SiO6 phosphors doped with Eu2+, Ce3+ and Tb3+ has been synthesized via combustion method at 550°C. BaAl2SiO6:Eu2+ phosphor shows emission band at 450nm, under 337nm excitation wavelengths. Whereas BaAl2SiO6:Ce3+ phosphor shows emission at 426nm, keeping excitation constant at 325nm. The broad band emission of Eu2+ and Ce3+ ions was observed due to 5d–4f transition of rare earth ions. Tb3+ activated BaAl2SiO6 phosphors shows emission bands at 544nm, 551nm under mercury excitation at 240nm respectively. The excitation bands extend from 220 to 270nm which is assigned to the interconfiguration 4f8–4f75d1 transition of Tb3+ ion. XRD and SEM characterization were carried out to study phase purity and surface morphology of the phosphor powder.
