Abstract
The present work aims to describe the case of a Quarter Horse foal, 9 months old and weighing 166 kg, which was tended to by the medical and surgical clinic for large animals at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Paraná for correction of a cleft palate. Xylazine (0.5 mg/kg) was used as preanesthetic medication. Subsequently, induction was performed with propofol (1mg/kg) and ketamine (1 mg/kg). For anesthetic maintenance, isoflurane, lidocaine (3 mg/kg/h), ketamine (0.6 mg/kg/h) and dexmedetomidine (1 ug/kg/h) were used. Intraoperative analgesia was combined with locoregional blocks, with maxillary, mental and inferior alveolar nerve blocks being performed using anatomical references with lidocaine and bupivacaine (3 ml per site). Among the physiological parameters monitored, heart rate, systolic blood pressure, mean blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure stand out, having remained stable throughout the anesthetic period. Finally, the maxillary, mental and inferior alveolar nerve block technique was possibly a viable alternative for the proposed procedure, since there were no parametric alterations of nociception during surgery.
