Abstract

The serious problem of control of freshwater leeches from infested ponds or lakes has received little attention (Gouck et al. 1967, Kimura and Keegan 1966, Moore 1923). In fact, the extent of such infestations is not clearly known, but without doubt it is considerably more important than published reports indicate. In South Carolina alone, 3 recent confirmed cases of leech-infested swimming areas have come to my attention: Lake Jemiki, Oconee County; Paris Mountain State Park, Greenville County; and Aiken State Park, Aiken County. Reported here is the summary of observations on these ponds (with emphasis on Lake Jemiki) which will be of use to others faced with similar problems.
