Abstract

The study was performed on ninety-five children between the ages 10 to 20 years from an impoverished area (Çukurca) in Ankara, Turkey. Blood zinc (plasma and RBC) concentrations and plasma IGF-1 levels were measured simultaneously. The mean plasma zinc and IGF-1 in the growth retarded group (height <3rd percentile) were lower as compared to those with normal growth. There was a statistically significant difference between plasma IGF-1 levels in these two groups (P < 0.01). There was also a positive correlation between plasma zinc and IGF-1 levels with linear growth in these children from “slum areas” with under-nutrition. Our study provides further confirmation about a relationship between plasma zinc and IGF-1. J. Trace Elem. Exp. Med. 14:31–34, 2001 © 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
