Abstract

1. 1. Four methods of estimating haemolymph volume of adult crickets are discussed. 2. 2. A simple bleeding method and the amaranth dye dilution method are shown to be invalid. 3. 3. A novel method, based on sodium concentration counting, gave reliable results, but with considerable individual variations. 4. 4. The 14C-carboxyl inulin dilution method gave the most respectable and consistant results. 5. 5. The blood volume/unit weight of female adult crickets decreases sharply immediately after ecdysis, but the absolute blood volume does not alter greatly with age. 6. 6. Some fluctuations are associated with the reproductive development, whereas rearing temperature had no effect on haemolymph volume.
