Abstract

Purpose: osteoarthritis (OA) is no longer conceived as a simple wear-and-tear problem of articular cartilage. Actually, it is a whole joint disorder subject to the interplay between local and systemic risk factors. Hypertension, the commonest systemic vascular comorbidity in knee OA, has been implicated in the pathogenesis of OA. Yet the underlying mechanism is unclear. In this talk, we will outline the conflicting results on the association between hypertension and OA, and discuss the plausible pathomechanism at the crossroad of epidemiology and molecular biology.
