Abstract

A living system in thermodynamic equilibrium is a contradiction in terms. A system in equilibrium would be dead. On the other hand, if, after some embryonic period, a living system reaches its prime development then, as often celebrated in song and dance, it becomes our foremost objective to maintain this state, as a steady state, for as long as possible.
