Abstract

Ageing is associated with a loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia) with well documented detrimental effects on function and quality of life. Strategies to ameliorate the loss of muscle mass have focused on the use of high resistance strength training to increase mass and improve function. For a muscle to grow there are two basic requirements. There must be a protein synthesis mediated net gain in protein and an increase in the number of nuclei in muscle fibres to maintain the myonuclear domain. This presentation will focus on the role of satellite cells.
