Abstract

1. 1. Relative oxygen carrying capacities, hematocrits and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentrations (MCHC) were determined for blood of fetal, neonatal and adult seaperch, Embiotoca lateralis. 2. 2. There is no significant difference in relative oxygen carrying capacities among the developmental stages examined. However, hematocrit was higher and MCHC was lower in the fetal fish. 3. 3. Erythrocytes of mid-gestation fetal fish are about 1.7 times larger by volume than those of adult fish although the sizes of nuclei are indistinguishable. 4. 4. It is proposed that maternal-fetal MCHC differences may be involved in facilitating fetal oxygen uptake in E. lateralis.
