Abstract

Objective To understand blood manganese(Mn)background value level in general population at Sanshui district of Foshan,Guangdong province,to assess the effect of manganese on health in these people, and to provide support for screening poisoning causes, disease diagnosis, and prevention and control of heavy metal pollution. Methods Multistage stratified cluster random sampling was used.Blood samples were collected from 804 people older than 6 with non-professional exposure to chemical factors during the period of October 2009 to April 2010.Ion coupling mass spectrometry(ICP-MS)was applied for detection. Results The normal blood Mn reference value ranged from 5.89 to 18.18 μg/L,with a mean value of(11.36±3.59)μg/I;Blood Mn concentration was highest in the group of older than 16 and lowest in the group of older than 30.Blood Mn level was higher in females than in males. Conclusions General population at Sanshui district has a higher level of blood Mn background value;and the value differs in age and sex.The reason why is that may be associated with difference among labs, dietary differences, and environmental Mn loads. It suggests that further research is needed and prevention and control of heavy metal pollution at Sanshui district should be strengthened. Key words: General population; Blood manganese; Background value
