Abstract

1. Values for the three blood constituents: calcium, inorganic phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase, were estimated in two groups of persons from different social levels. The results are displayed in nine tables and two graphs. 2. The mean calcium value for Group 1, college students, is found to be significantly higher than the corresponding figure for Group 2, which consisted of working-class sanatorium patients and contacts. 3. Phosphorus values were not significantly different from one group to another, or between the sub-groups. 4. The mean alkaline phosphatase level for Group 1 was found to be significantly lower than the corresponding value for working-class sanatorium patients, but the difference between the Group 1 value and that of the sub-group contacts was not significant. 5. The results are interpreted as indicating that a deficiency in calcium saturation is associated with an increased tendency to tuberculous disease.
