Abstract

A golden era, a silver anniversary. The first edition of<i>Blood Groups in Man</i>appeared in 1950. The 1975 edition, the sixth of its line, is described by the authors as "the last...: the subject has grown to need more than our two pencils." Within its steadily expanding covers, this volume has, for a quarter century, compiled, analyzed, and enriched the world literature on the entire field of red blood cell antigens. In 1950, two hundred seventy-six pages were sufficient to discuss all the known blood group systems: ABO, Lewis, Rh, Kell, Lutheran, P, and MNS. The newest edition devotes chapter titles to 16 blood systems, not to mention innumerable antigens, surface characteristics, and serologic phenomena organized under other headings. There may well be one or two topics or studies the authors have overlooked, but<i>Blood Groups in Man</i>remains the all-inclusive, remarkably comprehensible reference work no blood banker, immunohematologist,
