Abstract

HPHE Northern District of Papua comprises an area of about 8,000 square miles, 1 lying between the north-east coast and the central mountains of the Owen Stanley Range. To the south, it adjoins the Milne Bay District, and to the north the Morobe District of New Guinea. The coastline is about 150 miles long. The width of the district is in general only 50-70 miles, and in this short distance the land rises from sea-level to over 10,000 feet. The coastal plain is more marked in the northern half of the District, the southern part being of a more broken and mountainous character.
