Abstract

The construction and performance of a system to monitorpO2,pCO2, and blood oxygen saturation for extended periods is described. The system is designed to be used during prolonged extracorporeal circulation procedures. The gases are measured by allowing them to diffuse into a stream of pure nitrogen which carries them to specific gas sensors, amperometric for O2 and calorimetric for CO2. Oxygen saturation is measured with a dual-wavelength solid-state oximeter. Linearity, response time, and otherin vitro test results are shown, as well as those of a 73-hrex vivo test with a lamb. In general, theex vivo tests showed the system to give values within 5 mm Hg (O2) or 3 mm Hg (CO2) compared with direct measurements on blood samples.
