Abstract

SummaryThe blood of 40 camels has been examined. The erythrocyte electrolyte concentrations/litre of red blood cells were significantly lower than those of other mammals. This low electrolyte level/litre of red blood cells appears to be due to a very high concentration of haemoglobin within the cell. A mean cell hemoglobin concentration of approximately 50% has been demonstrated in the camel. Similarities between the erythrocytes of the camel and those of a rare sheep red blood cell type are noted.
