Abstract
IN Italy, dogs in shelters are being proposed as blood donors. Several ethical concerns arise about the recruitment of canine blood donors at municipal and sanitary shelters in the context of a canine volunteer blood donor bank. These shelters were established following the current Italian law that forbids euthanasia of abandoned dogs. Both sanitary and municipal shelters are supervised by veterinary services and, in particular, municipal shelters house homeless dogs waiting for adoption or until the end of their life.
