Abstract

Dr. Carl H. Smith died prior to the publication of the present edition of Blood Diseases of Infancy and Childhood , which was completed by Dennis Miller, MD, who is Dr. Smith's successor as director of the Division of Pediatric Hematology at the New York Hospital—Cornell Medical Center. Dr. Smith was one of the few grand old men of pediatric hematology. His interests in the field were diverse and included contributions in the following areas: chronic transfusion programs for children afflicted with thalessemia, congenital hypoplastic anemia, iron metabolism, infectious lymphocytosis, and erythroblastosis. In addition to being a critical investigator, Dr. Smith was above all a clinician, and to this aspect of his profession he brought concern and empathy for the children he treated, which is the hallmark of the true physician.
