Abstract

A T the turn of the twentieth century, the Russian Symbolists, newcomers on the literary scene, in their aim to revitalize Russian literature through an infusion of fresh ideas and forms sought new vistas and sources of inspiration. Aspiring to encompass all that was creative and conducive to creativity, the Symbolists turned to art and consequently to Italy, the home of Dante-the cradle of the arts. The ideal of restoring unity to the fragmented Russian culture led to a more perceptive analysis of Italian classical and Renaissance literature and art, where this unity predominated.
