The use of a blog as a platform for extensive reading becomes valuable since it provides the possibility of readership and opportunity for interaction and collaboration. As the online journal facilitating users to display information in chronological order and connected to the Internet, the blog also can help students to get a wide variety of reading materials, which should be conducted in extensive reading activities. However, the use of a blog in this study is integrated with the process of learning in the classroom so that the students can use it for reporting their reading activities and share what they read beyond the classroom. This study is conducted during one semester in one of the universities in Indonesia using six students of the first grade joining an extensive reading course as the participants. In this research, a case study is used as a research method. It aims at analyzing the students' perception of the use of blogs in extensive reading. Findings show that the blog is beneficial for promoting the students' reading interest, building autonomy and creativity, and providing a reflective platform. The blog consists of several features allowing students to get the numerous reading sources that are appropriate with their language level and interest. Enhancing University Students’ Extensive Reading Outcomes: Integrating Motivation, Technology, and Collaborative Active Learning. Objective: This study aimed to enhance students’ outcomes in the Extensive Reading course by integrating motivation, technology, and Collaborative Active Learning (CAL) into the learning process. It was conducted in response to low student achievement and to address the research gap, since few studies have comprehensively explored the combined role of motivation, technology, and CAL in improving extensive reading performance. Methods: The study involved 49 third-semester English Education students in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, using a mixed-method approach. A quasi-experimental pre-test/post-test design, along with semi-structured interviews, was employed. The experimental group (n = 25) received the intervention, while the control group (n = 24) followed traditional methods. The intervention lasted for 14 weeks, beginning with a pre-test in week 1, followed by the intervention from weeks 2 to 15, and a post-test in week 16. Interviews were conducted with six purposively selected students (three high-achieving and three low-achieving) to support the quantitative findings. A paired samples t-test was used to analyze the data. Findings: The results showed that the integration of motivation, technology, and collaborative active learning significantly improved students' learning outcomes for the Extensive Reading course in the experimental group (pre-test mean: 41.32; post-test mean: 66.64; p <0.001), while the control group showed no change. Interview data revealed that technology and collaboration enhanced motivation and engagement among students in the experimental group, whereas the control group reported low motivation and limited support. Conclusion: Policymakers should support digital literacy initiatives, teachers should implement collaborative and technology-based reading activities, and universities should integrate these approaches into their curriculum design to enhance the success of extensive reading. Keywords: integration, motivation, technology, collaborative active learning, extensive reading, higher education.

Extensive reading activities are believed to be an effective way of increasing literacy and language development. Although previous work focused on the relation between extensive reading and overall linguistic competence and learner attitudes, the perspectives of language learners toward the post activities of extensive reading have not been adequately addressed. The study reported in this article was conducted to illuminate how English major and non English major students at a university in South Korea positioned themselves with regards to the follow-up extensive reading activities. Through a recursive analysis of interview data, survey, field notes, and student journal entries, the findings demonstrated that although a majority of students positioned themselves as tolerant and competent when they engaged in extensive reading activities, they positioned themselves as less capable in the required post-reading tasks. In light of the findings, implications for extensive reading activities and roles of teachers are discussed.

The present study serves as an insightful teaching summary that focuses on students’ reading comprehension, through investigating the effectiveness and application of a teacher’s scaffolding in a one-semester extensive reading course. The teacher provides scaffolding throughout an entire semester of the extensive reading course. Students’ performance on multiple-choice questions of the first as well as the last unit has been collected and analyzed to determine whether they have enhanced their reading comprehension abilities or not. Based on the both qualitative and quantitative data, the findings reveal that students’ comprehension competence of extensive reading materials has notably increased after a semester of the teacher’s scaffolding. The result suggests that reading skills such as guessing, outlining, identifying topic sentence of each paragraph and determining the main idea of a passage can be applied as effective scaffolding techniques in extensive reading courses.

  • Jeffrey Huffman

Extensive reading (ER) is an effective way to provide large amounts of comprehensible input to foreign language learners, but many teachers and administrators remain unconvinced, and it has been argued that there is still insufficient evidence to support the claims that have been made regarding its benefits. Few studies have looked at ER’s effect on reading fluency. This article reports on an investigation of the reading rate gains of Japanese nursing college freshmen during a one-semester ER course, with students in an intensive reading (IR) course serving as the comparison group (N = 66). The ER group achieved significantly higher reading rate gains (20.73 wpm) than the IR group (-.62 wpm), without sacrificing comprehension. These results add to a growing body of empirical evidence of the effectiveness of ER.

This study examines the impact of long-term extensive book reading activities on students’ writing skills in a distinct context lacking prior research. Employing technology to monitor students’ reading, the research focuses on first language long-term reading activities, a domain unexplored in Taiwan’s education system. Tracking book reading over three years, the study unveils the gradual fulfillment of reading goals and explores the connection between extensive book reading and writing performance. The investigation also found that graded reading and Bridge Books’ roles in enhancing students’ reading and writing outcomes. Employing rigorous data analysis, the study offers a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationship between extensive book reading and writing performances. Findings reveal Picture Books and Basic Books as popular reading categories, influencing writing quality and word count during the revision process. However, there are potential trade-offs between quantity and quality of the writing performances, specifically observed in Bridge Books’ impact on initial draft and revision quality. The complex interplay between different grades of the book and writing performance emerges, suggesting implications for educational interventions and further research in enhancing writing performances through extensive reading.
