Abstract

Blockchain is a technology that was first outlined in 1991 and more widely popularized in 2008. It is most known for its association with cryptocurrency and digital assets. Still, the underlying technology that stores information about records and transactions has significant potential for the many activities in biopharma product development and commercialization. In this perspective, we try to demystify what a blockchain is and discuss what properties blockchain has that can be applied to biopharma companies. We will explore groups taking on this challenge and scratch the surface around obstacles needed to be overcome for wider adoption.
