Abstract

We study Bloch waves and Wannier functions in periodic superstructure Bragg gratings using coupled-mode theory. We formulate the procedure that leads to Wannier functions that have a high degree of symmetry and appear to fall off exponentially, away from the photonic well. These Wannier functions can be considered to be the equivalent of those found by Kohn for the one-dimensional Schr\"odinger equation with a periodic potential [W. Kohn, Phys. Rev. $115,$ 809 (1959)].
