Abstract

Abstract A number of materials have been tested for their efficacy in the prevention and treatment of bloat in cattle. A water-soluble anti-foaming agent was sought which would prevent bloat for a period and be suitable for administration via the drinking water. The most useful found were the neutral, non-ionic “Pluronic” detergents, L61 and L62, which protected cows from bloat for 24 h after 30 ml had been administered. They were, however, too unpalatable to be self-administered via the water supply. The “Pluronics”, L61 and L62, were the most effective agents found for the relief of bloated animals.
