Abstract

Bacterial populations and total microbial activity towards red clover in rumen contents from non-lactating cows of differing bloat susceptibilities have been studied in vitro when the animals have been stallfed on bloat-inducing red clover. No consistent patterns of differences were found between any of the cows. Clover protein is degraded rapidly in vitro, but less quickly after denaturation by foaming. This may be significant in the occurrence of bloat.
