Abstract

ABSTRACT Gasification is an efficient and environmentally friendly treatment process for petroleum coke. But the rheology and stability of petroleum coke-water slurries (PWS) do not meet the feeding requirements of gasification. This study blends Hami coal (HM) with two petroleum cokes (Lianyungang (LYG) and Lanqiao (LQ)) to prepare high quality slurries. The results indicate that the properties of petroleum coke have significant effects on the blending slurries. With a certain amount of oxygen-containing functional groups and small molecular branched chains, LYG could be blended with HM to prepare high quality slurries with a maximum solid loading of 64.87%, static stability of 4 days, and a shear-thinning rheological behavior. However, HM could not provide the same benefits to the slurries prepared with LQ, as LQ exhibits a higher degree of aromatic carbonization. Aggregation state of the particles is the main reason behind this difference.
