Abstract

Male and female chinchillas were exposed to single or repeated simulated sonic booms lasting 200 ms and having overpressures of 105 and 253 pascals. The animals were sacrificed 72 h after exposure. Bleeding into the basal turn of the scala tympani of the cochlea, unilateral or bilateral, was found to occur regularly. Control animals, not exposed to the simulated sonic boom, usually did not show any bleeding into their inner ears.
