Abstract

The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) moves approximately 60 000 000 tonnes of material each year to support production of both iron concentrates and pellets for sale in North America and overseas. Over the past three decades IOC has prided itself on its safety commitment, successful utilization of pacesetter technology, the implementation of advanced quality management techniques and the continuous focus on improving the bottom line business results. Over the past year IOC has been actively pursuing the application of blasting technologies to the improvement of its mining operations. The introduction of new explosive materials, new initiating systems and the implementation of advanced computer technology, has contributed to the increase in productivity in 1994. This paper discusses the successful application of blasting technology in 1994 and the directions future work will take at IOC.
