Abstract

A new apparatus for making blackbody infrared radiative dissociation (BIRD) measurements at below ambient temperature is described, and its use for measuring threshold dissociation energies of weakly bound clusters is demonstrated. Hydration energies are determined for alkaline-earth metal water clusters, X 2+(H 2O) n , X=Mg, Ca and n=8–10. For n=8 and 9, the energies obtained from BIRD measurements are in excellent agreement with values reported previously, but for n=10, the energies are slightly lower than those determined previously using the high-pressure ion source mass spectrometry (HPMS) equilibrium method.
