Abstract
Adult black vine weevils, Otiorhynchus sulcatus (F.), fed on membrane filter disks treated with leaf extracts of ‘Alpine’ strawberry, Fragaria vesca L. A mixture of several sugars present in an aqueous extract stimulated feeding. Sitosterol was identified as one of several lipid phagostimulants. Sucrose and sitosterol were synergistic in promoting weevil feeding. Phagostimulants were active at the same levels as present in leaves (area basis).
