Abstract

Hydrothermal vent systems forming "black smoker chimneys" with polymetallic sulfide deposits have been found at several places on the midocean ridges since their initial discovery in May 1979 by the RISE (Rivera Submersible Experiments) Project Group on the East Pacific Rise at 21°N.
