Abstract

Drawing attention to the interface between social activism and rap music over the last few years, Oware explores the embrace of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement among some in the rap community. The high-profile deaths of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland sparked the BLM movement. In this chapter, Oware recounts the circumstances surrounding their deaths and then analyzes how several artists; for example, Killer Mike and Tef Poe, pay homage to these individuals through their music. Additionally, their passing inspires rappers not only to address racist vigilantism and police brutality but also to articulate larger critiques of systemic and institutional racism. Oware contends that the BLM movement, along with high profile black killings, provide a heightened sense of awareness among some current artists.
