Abstract

Joy is defined as a feeling of great happiness and pleasure. Joy has also been described as divine purpose in action, paying homage to our ancestors, and the celebration of sacredness. Choosing joy in the face of oppression, violence, and global pandemonium can be viewed as resistance and self-care in current day. This essay serves a personal narrative of one Black woman's experience during the 2020 pandemic of COVID-19. The author recounts her experience centering self-care utilizing ancestor reverence, spiritual practices, creating community and embracing love and joy.
