Abstract

The Journal of Popular CultureVolume 31, Issue 3 p. 115-135 Black Heroes in Sport: From Jack Johnson to Muhammad Ali Joseph Dorinson, Joseph Dorinson Joseph Dorinson was educated at Columbia University and has taught at Long Island University since 1966. His research, grounded in popular culture, spans sports history, humor studies, immigration, Brooklyn and Jewish history, World War II movies and music, and African-American studies. In 1997, he directed LIU's major conference on “Jackie Robinson: Race, Sports and the American Dream.” He has appeared on television, radio and in various newspapers. His publications reflect a broad range of subjects. Granted the first David Newton Award for excellence in teaching, Dorinson introduced the first courses in Sports History, Social History, Humor, Afro-American History and Holocaust Studies at LIU Brooklyn.
