Abstract

THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists & Chemical Engineers' (NOBCChE) opened its meeting in New Orleans last month on the heels of the Academy Awards milestone. In the 74-year history of the awards, Halle Berry became the first African American to win an Oscar for best actress and Denzel Washington became only the second African American to win in the category of best actor. The conference organizing committee could not have planned a better opening than being greeted on the first morning of the meeting with newspapers adorned with pictures of an emotional Berry and an elated Washington accepting their awards. And the moment was not lost on NOBCChE, which is in the midst of celebrating a milestone of its own—its 30-year anniversary.
