Abstract

South Africa is a complex society in transition, on the verge of important socioeconomic and political changes. Adjustments and transformations are also expected in its domestic tourism industry. It is imperative to understand well the evolving patterns of leisure activities by the various population groups and appreciate the importance and magnitude of changes. But, as in many other countries, consistent and systematic information on the local business of tourism is not easily available in South Africa. In February 1985, a special, descriptive questionnaire was sent to a large selection of tourist experts and professionals, inquiring on the present and future trends of the various sectors of the local market. Among the most startling indications were the very high participation figures for Black holidaymakers and the expected fast growth of this new sector of the market, as well as the evidence of changing leisure interests with a decline of traditional holiday attractions and the rise of unconventional, open-air activities.
