Abstract

By examiningthe experiences ofboth newly arrived and long-term African immigrants, it is possible to give an account ofSub-Saharansin Barcelona, the urban center ofthe autonomous communityofCatalonia and second largest city in Spain. Using snowball sampling, I conducted a total of twenty interviews, twelve formal interviews with an open-ended questionnaire and eight interviews without the use ofa questionnaire. Through their responses, it is possible to infer that a racial identity among BlackAfricans is not formed upon arrival into a white society. It is also possible to deduce their ideas on their own integration process into Spanish (specifically Catalan) culture, on the way this culture is practiced in their lives, as well as on social issues affecting them.
