Abstract
Objective To evaluate the bite opening effect of the fixed bite plate in the treatment of deep bite patients.Methods 12 deep bite patients with low or average mandibular plane angle were collected (6 male,6 female,12-30 years old,mean 17 years old) in experiment group.They received straight wire appliances with fixed bite plate.Another 12 matched patients were collected as control group to receive straight wire appliances only.Study models were taken before treatment and after the deep bite corrected.The overbite change was measured and the time needed for bite opening was calculated.Results Model analysis showed that overbite decreased significantly.The mean overbite reduction in the patients with fixed bite plate was 3.37 mm.The average time for bite opening was shorter significantly in the experimental group (average 3.75 months) than in the control group.Conclusions Fixed bite plate on the upper anterior teeth was effective on bite opening.It can be used throughout the treatment without interrupting the orthodontic procedures.
