Abstract

This paper deals with an investigation of the characteristics of the scattering of sound from a flat plate, five wavelengths long. The scatter patterns were calculated based on the simplifying assumption of total reflection and experimentally checked by echo ranging in air. Agreement was found to be reasonably good although some interesting deviations in the side-lobe structure were observed. Patterns calculated and experimentally, obtained include bistatic backscatter patterns as well as the scatter patterns for a given incident wave.
