Abstract

From a general turbulence model, useful properties of the bicoherence γ ω1,ω2 are derived: Let S≡ Σ ω′ γ 2 ω′, ω− ω′ , then S⩽1 for near-Gaussian fluctuations ( S≈1 if the turbulent broadening is small), and S may be > 1 for turbulence dominated by coherent structures. These regimes of increasing nonlinear coherence are demonstrated through analysis of data from a toroidal plasma device.
