Abstract

ABSTRACTFolsom bison hunters on the North American Plains 12,500 calendar years ago killed large numbers of bison within natural arroyos. Research suggests that a link between animal physiology and hunter weaponry provides a deadly combination that quickly incapacitates the prey. The presence of a single rather than compartmentalized chest cavity in bison, plus a chest wound kept open by a protruding spear or dart shaft, provides the key to quickly dispatching these large and dangerous animals.
